Mintek’s Small Scale Mining and Benefication Div. (SSMB) was established with the aim of assisting entrepreneurs in applying for mining permits, conducting test work required to draw up feasibility studies, commissioning plants, beneficiating ores and minerals and marketing their products. The mission of SSMB is to provide and promote innovative technology transfer, industrial growth and human development to the small, medium and micro–enterprises (SSME’s) in the mining sector, thus facilitating empowerment and sustainability. Some of our recent projects are as follows. Glass Beads- Historically African women used to make beads from various compounds including clay, bone and ostrich shell. SSMB has developed a process that manufactures ethnic looking glass beads from recycled bottles and has already transferred this technology to six groups of women around South Africa.
